Things to do with your child this summer holiday

27th July 2016

Keeping your kids busy during the summer holidays doesn’t have to be a chore. With travel abroad becoming more expensive, knowing about the perfect local attractions and home activities to entertain the children is becoming increasingly important to parents. The Nottingham area isn’t short of fun days out, guaranteed to give the whole family a memorable few weeks. Need some ideas? Take a look at our guide of things to do with your child this summer holiday.

Museums and more

Museums don’t have to be stuffy and boring. In fact, there is plenty of fun to be found if you know where and when to go. Mansfield museum offers regular, cheap activity days throughout summer, specifically targeted to your little ones; activities include art, cookery and crafts. Another great interactive museum is the Galleries of Justice, which consists of an actor-led tour through a world of historical crime and punishment, and is both educational and entertaining.

Get moving

Get your kids up and active with these local adventure spots. The Nottingham area is strewn with indoor play areas, including Playmania in Mansfield, which boasts 3 floors of play equipment. A great feature of this place is that there’s no age limit, so both adults and older kids alike are welcome to join in the fun (just remember socks!). For more exercise-orientated fun, visit the recently opened Planet Bounce in Nottingham city centre which offers a safe haven for 4-65 year olds to jump across a giant room of 50 interconnected trampolines.

Summer events

The legend returns! Between the 1st and 7th August, Sherwood Forest will play host to the Robin Hood Festival. Spectacles include jousting, falconry and outdoor theatre. Parking is charged, but admission is free. Or maybe you fancy a lazy beach day with the kids but don’t want to take a long trip to the coast. Between the 22nd July and the 4th September, the Old Market Square in Nottingham is graced with an artificial beach, complete with paddling pool, rides, and delicious food and drink.

Parks

What better way to get your kids enjoying the summer sun than with a trip to a park. Nottinghamshire brags several large country parks, including Clumber Park near Worksop. An ideal family destination, Clumber offers 3,800 acres of parkland for your kids to explore, including an educational discovery centre. Alternatively, let your kids get up close to some animals. White Post Farm gives your youngsters the chance to see animals ranging from donkeys to meerkats, finishing off the day with a run around in the farm’s indoor and outdoor play parks.

Rainy Days Indoors

Children arguably have the biggest imagination out of anyone on the planet, meaning you might not always have to take a trip out to entertain them. Sometimes you might just feel like kicking back and being creative at home. Bored of the old board games? Make your own. Or build a den, cook some fun foods, make a stop-motion movie with dolls and figurines. Get your kids to help you think of some more unique ideas.
