Bonfire Night crafts for children

11th October 2017

Bonfire Night is looming and with that in mind it’s time to get the craft box out because this year we have some exciting DIY decorations and new ideas for you and your children to do together. If you’re anything like us, we associate Bonfire Night with bright sparkly colours, the sweet luxurious taste of toffee apples and the snap, crackle and pop from an impressive firework display. Whether you’re decorating your house or catering for family and friends, get involved with some fun masterpieces that’ll add to the atmosphere of the night.

Decoration

First things first, if you’re having a party you will want to decorate and what better way to do this than with a safe, child friendly poppin’ rocket bunting? With your very own DIY rocket bunting, you will have a stunning decoration and the added fun of cascading confetti that the children can release through a simple pull of a string.

Rocket bunting

What you need:

  • Beads
  • Confetti
  • Glue
  • Hole puncher
  • Ribbons
  • Scissors
  • Sheets of card
  • Stapler
  • String
  • Tape
  • Tissue paper
  • Toilet roll tubes

Step 1 – Firstly, use the hole puncher to create two holes opposite each other on each toilet roll tube.

Step 2 – Thread a piece of string through each hole and tie them together at the top, creating a small triangle, thread a bead through to keep the string in the middle and do not cut the rest of the string – keep it long.

Step 3 – Using your coloured tissue paper, tape a random selection of ribbons to the inside of the paper and roll around the toilet roll tubes to decorate and tape down.

Step 4 – Cut out large circles and make one cut into the centre of the circle and curve around to make mini cones, staple in place.

Step 3 – Thread the string from earlier through the top of each cone.

Step 4 – Cut out smaller circles and glue them to a square piece of tissue paper and leave to dry.

Step 5 – Fill each rocket with confetti.

Step 6 – Pop a small hole through each square piece of tissue paper and thread through a new piece with knots at both ends and bring the base to create a trap door to your confetti-filled rocket.

Step 7 –  Glue the edges of the excess tissue paper and fold upwards to keep it in place.

Fun Snacks

Apple Snaps

What you need:

  • Apples
  • Chocolate toffee apple slices
  • Dark chocolate
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Sprinkles or types of decoration
  • Toffee or caramel sauce

How to:

Step 1 – Cut the apples top-down to create large lengthway slices and lie them flat. Make sure that these slices are chunky enough to allow for a lollipop stick to be inserted.

Step 2 – Break up your choice of white or milk chocolate and melt in a bowl, over a pan of boiling water.

Step 3 – Before inserting the lollipop stick into the apple, dip the end of the stick into the liquid chocolate and then, place the chocolate end into the apple (this helps to secure them to the stick).

Step 4 – Once all the apples are securely on their stick, dip the whole apple into the chocolate and then leave to dry on baking paper and pop them into the fridge to set.

Step 5 – After 20 minutes, take out the chocolate coated apples and spread the toffee or caramel sauce on top in patterns or spread across the surface so that the sprinkles and decoration stick to the apples well.

Bonfire cupcakes

Make some quick and easy cupcakes with your children with the use of a handy ready-to-bake cupcake kit and follow the requirements on the back. This usually involves 2 eggs, oil or water. So all you need to do is follow the steps on the packet and add your few simple ingredients without measuring, bake and complete with bonfire decoration.

What you need:

  • Flake chocolate bars
  • Frosting in a piping bag
  • Pizza cutter
  • Ready to roll coloured icing (orange, yellow and red)
  • Rolling pin

How to:

Step 1 – Roll out the coloured icing and cut out as many small wobbly flame shapes in each colour (using a pizza cutter) as you can.

Step 2 – Once you have lots of little flames, use the frosting in the piping bag to create the base for the ‘bonfire icing’ on top of the cupcakes. Keep the icing as central as you can and work your way up – creating small circle motions, working it to the top.

Step 3 – Break the chocolate flakes whilst in the packets to keep it from going everywhere and open up the packets. Place the pieces of flake vertically against your icing tower.

Step 4 – Decorate with a mixture of orange, yellow and red flames between the gaps of the chocolate flakes.

Step 5 – Once you’ve done this process to all of the cupcakes, add the remainders of the flake bits to any white icing you can see.
